Short Film 1: London
[20th Feb - 12th Mar]
Research
As this was my first time researching and structuring my project, I was pleased with how much I had accomplished researching around and preparing for the filming day. I am glad that I have pushed forward with the test day despite the delays, which gave me an insight into what to expect for the filming day.
Unfortunately, the only setback I had was giving myself enough time to update this Journal as I hadn't expected the amount of content I covered and ended up using a couple of days in the editing week to fill this in.
I will take this into consideration next time and organise more time for me to update this journal:
-
Using a bit more of my free time to cover
-
Sectioning dedicated time slots every day to update what I did during that day
Filming
Overall, I was really pleased with all the footage I managed to cover in London. The test day on the week before really ironed out what I needed to keep an eye on (Batteries, breaks, SD cards). Of course, even when identifying issues on the test day, there were still shortcomings that unfortunately cannot be accounted for during the shoot, but I feel that I was able to overcome them quickly so I can continue the shoot as planned.

One thing that I want to do better next time is document more of the shoot with photos and videos to show more of what is going on during the day. This is so I can reference how I overcame the shortcomings quicker.

Editing
Apart from some minor setbacks such as illnesses and also client unreadiness, overall I feel that I have used the time that I had to the best of my ability and do not feel as behind as I initially thought. Instead of having a dedicated day to do my reflective journal and giving myself time to do it day by day make it easier to remember and catch up on what needed to be done for that day so I will be continuing to use this method throughout this FMP.
Also, I am glad that I have taken some time to do a test project to practice techniques I have learnt and also been able to figure out what colour-grading works. That allowed me to streamline the process of colour-grading the clips in the main project which is why I was able to catch up. I will be doing this for the other cities as well.

Evaluation
For the first film of the FMP, I did expect to have some growing pains as mentioned during the research. Making the templates and organising everything in the new format did contribute to some delays and on top of that underestimating the amount of information that was needed to be imported into this reflective journal proved to be a test of my organisational skills. Fortunately, I was able to reflect on this earlier in the project so I managed to elevate and organised the amount of work more efficiently and hopefully be able to use this knowledge further down the line in the project.
During the filming and editing phase, I realised that the majority of the problems relate to audio issues. Although those issues aren't major, This is most likely because I emphasised on learning to use the video equipment. Now that I feel more comfortable with using said equipment I'm going to plan for more focus for the audio aspect of this project
