Short Film 2: Nottingham
[3rd Apr- 23rd Apr]
Research
With the planning for Cambridge in mind I have done extra research and planning to ensure I am able to shoot in the designated location. With the use of google earth, I was able to have a preview of shots that I might be able to recreate in the short film and basically be able to location scout without needing to be present in the location which is very helpful for my application with a tighter budget and time constraints.
Because I won't be accompanied for this shooting day, I have decided to opt out bring the gimble as operating the gimble with the rest of the equipment may prove too much of a hassle. Furthermore, another reason in excluding the gimble is because there would be rain during the shooting day, as the focus ring requires a physical cable plugged into the camera from the gimble, the ports will be exposed to the rain which is a risk for the camera being water damaged.
Filming
Overall I was pretty pleased with the amount of footage I was able to cover during my trip to Nottingham and thought I have covered more than I expected. However, because of the weather conditions, quite a lot of the audio footage was not usable because of wind noise.
I tried to cover the microphones with both of the pop filters for each mic on the portable recorder and it did make the recordings a lot better but it required me to switch from using the camera and the portable recorder separately.
Also as the day went on, I hadn't accounted for the amount of strain that my shoulder was in when carrying the equipment around by myself and even though I didn't bring the gimble, my shoulders were in a lot of pain when I made a stop for lunch. Fortunately, I have already shot most of the locations beforehand so I decided to shoot only one of the 2 locations left.
Editing
Because I have done the research for colour grading, I felt a lot more comfortable colour grading with a process that I now know how to follow.
For the audio, I have decided not to add the foley aspect of this because I feel that the music more than makes up for the overall feel of the short film though I have sound bites here and there to make the calmer part of the short film more impressive similar to the London short film.
As for the gaps in the video, I have decided to leave them blank as they were meant for intro titles. I have done the same for London because I feel I should finish all the short films first before naming everything to make the overall project more cohesive.

Evaluation
Overall, I feel because I have planned ahead for the trip I was a lot more prepared on what to shoot which explained how I was able to be ahead of schedule and also have enough footage for the short film.
For the next Leeds short film fortunately I will be accompanied during the trip so I will not need to worry as much about the amount of equipment I will be bringing. Though for any other projects that require shooting by myself, I will definitely use this as a learning experience to make sure I don't sustain any injury during the project.
For the editing, I am glad I have done more research about the colour grading as now I feel less intimidated by the colour grading tap further more because now I have a system in place I will be able to apply this on all projects that require any form of colour grading which includes the Leeds shortfilm.
