Music Making Stream

Stream summary:
  • Finished Main sections 1 - 3 of the backing track

  • Decided on 3 locations in London and their themes

    • City centre - Bright & bustling

    • The Barbican - Brutalist & dark

    • Greenwich (Green Park)- Light & airy â€‹

      • The reason why this has changed is because of how far the location is relative to the rest of the locations (more info in the Location Planning tab)

The idea behind streaming my music-making sessions is so that I will be able to reflect on what my thoughts were in case I have forgotten them, hence I have them recorded. Furthermore, I have put this on at the start of the week because I feel that music sets the pacing of the video, so I have chosen to create the music first and will use it as a guide on how I will shoot the video later on.
Streaming is also an excellent tool for getting live feedback from its chat function and I feel that the live feedback allowed me to create the tracks more quickly and gain more inspiration on what to film during the shoot.
In some retrospect, this itself is research as it answers questions on how I should shoot the video and ties in ideas and concepts that may lead to more questions that will hopefully improve the Short film.

What I’ve Learnt:

  • Stereo only uses the inbuilt microphones

  • 4CH Records with the inbuilt Microphones and any external microphones

  • Recommended to format the card before shooting

  • You need to press the record button first to arm it and then press it again for it to start recording

    • This is so you can monitor how it sounds and make any adjustments before finally recording

  • Recommended to set the levels to peak at -12 to -6db

  • The larger the bit rate the better the overall quality but larger the file size.

What I’ve Learnt:

  • SPL - Maximum sound pressure level a mic can take without it distorting.

  • Having a big camera setup may attract too much public attention, potentially ruining the shot if they confront you.

    • Using a more amateur-looking setup may detour this from happening

    • Tapping the logo of the camera with black tape may also detour this from happening as it draws less attention.

As I am going to film the city and record the foley simultaneously, I will need to use 2 devices at once. This being the gimbal and the field recorder. The gimble and camera work best with 2 handed operations with the weight so if I were to be shooting alone, it would be tough to balance both of these tasks.

  • With this in mind, I have an idea to attach the field recorder to my bag's top pocket to record audio while operating the gimble with 2 hands.

  • Unfortunately upon testing and moving around with the recorder in my backpack, the rustle of the straps when moving my arms caused a resonance in the recorder as it was in contact with it. I will have to result to another method later on.

    • Though with the still shots, I'm planning to take I will still use this technique as I will not be moving anyways
