Location planning
Because of what happened with the encounter with the security guard I will make sure that I am actually permitted to film the location of interest. Luckily there is a subsection on the Cambridge government site that shows me whom I need to contact if were to film in the location which is really helpful.
With that being said I picked out a few places to go to with online lists (Tripadvisor) that look interesting and/or reflected the feel of the music I have created.
Unfortunately during this time, due to the amount of time, I have given myself, I have concluded not to go ahead with shooting this day. All my reasons will be said further down this page.
Cambridge Day Plan
Temperature: 6'C - 14C
Weather: cloudy
Arrival
[8:19 - 9:13]
This time has already been decided when we bought the tickets and it's strictly because of trying to get the best pricing at the earliest time we could get there.
River Cam
[10:00 - 12:00]
As the River Cam is preserved by the “CONSERVATORS OF THE RIVER CAM” they have a website with useful information and rules to preserve the river.
Fortunately, they have a subsection talking about filming regulations which said I do not need to have a licence to shoot there.
Botanic Garderns
As the Botanic gardens are owned by the University of Cambridge, It is a bit more difficult to film there as the area is owned by them. Fortunately, there is a form that you can sign to apply to film there but it comes at a cost depending on whether it is shooting in the garden or a photo shoot in the garden. The cost is calculated by day.
-
As I am shooting the garden the price would be £48 which unfortunately isn’t something I can afford.
-
Regardless, the verification time is 7 days so if I were to apply I would have had to do it last Monday. Which means I wouldn’t be able to shoot there anyway.
-
With this in mind, I think I should put more focus on the location aspect of the research a bit more and start it earlier. This will give a better opportunity to send any needed emails to be able to shoot at the location desired.
-
King's Chapel
As expected, like in London, Churches and Chapels are usually closed from filming to retain privacy. So I will not be allowed to film there
Fitzwhilliam Museum
On the Fitzwilliam website, it clearly states that filming is not allowed during public open times. The museum is closed to the public on Monday so, fortunately, I should be able to shoot then while I’m in Cambridge.
-
Unfortunately, like the Botanic gardens, they will require a fee to shoot in the building and also they say it usually takes them 10 days' worth of notice for them to inquire about the filming application (The Google form was also not available so I would've been able to aply.)
Departure
[Open return]
Because we have booked Open-return tickets, We have some flexibility in overrunning in case we spend too long filming in a location or trying to figure out a problem along the way. But even though this is the case we aim to shoot all the scenery shots during daylight
Conclusion:
Upon further consideration with the amount of time I have given myself to plan the trip, it is not wise for me to go as most of the places that I was considering require at least a week's notice to shoot in that location. Because of this, I was unable to plan a reliable route around the city.
-
I will take this as organisation oversight but as I have not done this before I will try and learn from this as much as possible
-
So instead, for the next week I will research ahead of the other cities to see if the landmarks that I have in mind are available to shoot and if they require a week's notice to shoot there I will be able to send it during this week.
-
Furthermore, Cambridge is a driveable distance from where I live so if it would be possible, I should still be able to use this research to book it all be it a later date.
-
For organisation's sake, I will use separate pages for the allocated cities for its individual research.
